Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama City-Information
Security
Challenge
The Naval Surface Warfare Center, Panama
City Division (NSWC PCD), a 2,000-user CSS community with
myriad operating systems and software needed for continuous
lifecycle IT support including Information Assurance (IA).
Solution
We provide IA,
security management and support for the primary CSS Navy
Security Manager. DRC is fully responsible for SIPRNET
administration and maintenance; developing/administering
information security training; installing IA Vulnerability Alerts; and ensuring that all
systems are compliant with DoD Information Technology
Security C&A Process (DITSCAP) in storage, transmission, and
network/system processes. We review the System Security
Authorization Agreements (SSAAs), which establish guidelines
for system identification, environment, system architecture,
security requirements, organization and resources, and
DITSCAP plan. We ensure that security loopholes are closed
before they can be exploited, only qualified users are
granted access, and denial of service attacks are quickly
detected and isolated. We monitor and identify anomalies and
use firewall security and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)
products for monitoring network security. DRC conducts daily
scans on all network infrastructure equipment and reviews
daily logs for any possible threats to the network. DRC was
instrumental in developing IA training,
and we administer the IA intranet website
that allows government and contracted employees to take
researcher training and resolve IA
questions.
Benefits/Achievements
NSWC PCD received a satisfactory rating
from NAVSEA IG IA Team. NSWC PCD was the
only warfare center to receive a satisfactory
rating in that 18 month period, and DRC was instrumental in
preparing all required documentation for this inspection.
