Department of the Army Division of Environmental Health and Engineering (DEHE) Program Support Services

Challenge

The U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion & Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM) DEHE needed consultative expertise for installations worldwide to mitigate the potential health risks associated with surface water and wastewater issues at fixed and field activities.

Solution

To support these efforts, DRC performs a variety of environmental and public activities including:

  • Reviewing draft wastewater discharge permits and providing non-compliance assistance

  • Trouble-shooting wastewater treatment systems and evaluating performance

  • Performing industrial pretreatment planning

  • Writing and reviewing oil and hazardous substance spill prevention, contingencies and response plans

  • Providing pollution prevention planning

  • Providing surface water investigations to include aquatic bioaccumulation evaluations, fish kill investigations, wetland evaluations, and ecological risk assessments

  • Performing environmental compliance auditing

Benefits/Achievements

By applying expert knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local environmental regulations, environmental conservation "best practices," and scientific expertise, DRC personnel actively supports DEHE's mission to counter environmental threats to the health, fitness, and preparedness of Army personnel and the communities surrounding Army installations. Through pollution prevention planning; environmental compliance auditing at CONUS and OCONUS installations; and surface water investigations.
