Global Cyberspace Integration Center (GCIC) Vocabulary Support
Challenge
The Air Force Global Cyberspace
Integration Center needed to develop vocabularies to support
the development of web services for future NETCENTRIC C4ISR
systems that would be capable of delivering the right
information, in the right format, to the right place, at the
right time.
Solution
DRC supports the GCIC, by providing
lifecycle management assistance for warfighter vocabulary
data, information engineering, and integration services
solutions for Communities of Interest (COIs), and products.
DRC developed a tool known as “OneSource” for
collaboratively developing and managing web service
vocabularies. OneSource (version 2.1), is currently running
in a production deployment that consists of: 170 users, 156
vocabularies with 383,439 searchable terms, and 214 COI's.
The “OneSource” tool presents the user a
common view of vocabulary data via a user-friendly,
‘Google-like' browser. This browser allows a user to search
for terms across multiple sources. The service allows
analysts to cross-reference vocabulary sources while giving
system developers a resource for mapping information and
reusing common vocabularies.
DRC develops and maintains web services
as part of its support for OneSource. The business logic in
the OneSource application enables the sharing of various
vocabularies associated with a variety of AF COIs
established across the GIG enterprise. OneSource and the
associated web services are based on DoD Net-Centric
strategies and sharing principles which make the data
visible, accessible and understandable.
Currently DRC's management and staff
working on the GCIC program are involved in 17 different
forums across Air Force, Joint, and NATO communities They
are currently engaged with both DoD and NATO COIs acting as
key participants in Management Working Groups, and
Configuration Control Boards (CCBs), contributing to the
transformation of military messaging/data standards to
facilitate net-centricity via XML
Benefits/Achievements
OneSource promotes reusability,
visibility, and persistence of vocabulary data in a common
view regardless of the originating representation. OneSource
leverages the use of web services in providing Subject
Matter Expertise in interpretation of messaging standards
and the modernization and development of vocabularies into
XML.
DRC's successful program management has
allowed us to retain and provide a highly skilled technical
staff that is capable of implementing web services and
developing vocabularies to include constructing taxonomies,
ontologies, XML schemas, Ontology Web Language (OWL), data
dictionaries, synonym sets, Unified Modeling Language (UML)
schemas, and any other comparable forms of vocabulary that
are required to successfully support Service Oriented
Architecture (SOA).
