Games for Training
Challenge
The Army needed to develop training
support packages (TSPs) that could train a wide range of
collective tasks using the Army’s new Virtual Battlespace 2
(VBS2) gaming technology. VBS2 provides realistic
battlefield simulations using a COTS gaming engine. VBS2 was
designed for federal, state, and local government agencies
and can be specifically tailored to meet the individual
needs of military, law enforcement and homeland defense,
training environments.
Solution
DRC partnered with Metters to develop
complete TSPs for the Games for
Training (GFT) effort. Training support packages are being
developed that will support tasks for each of the Army’s ten
proponent Centers of Excellence (CoEs).
The TSPs provide operating procedures,
and training missions for conducting virtual tactical
exercises using the crawl, walk, run (CWR) training
methodology. The GFT TSPs simulate both tactical and
non-tactical full spectrum operating environments while
providing a comprehensive experience with the use of minimal
training resources or aids.
The TSPs provide the capability to train
a wide range of the skills necessary to lead the U.S. Army’s
Current Force. The TSPs allow Army leaders to demonstrate
knowledge and understanding of doctrinal tenants, exercise
proper techniques based on decision making concerning the
mission, situational awareness and the threat, and receive
immediate feedback on their performance.
DRC has developed a web-enabled database
tool to support training analysts in developing TSPs. This
tool provides analysts with the ability to identify tasks,
skills and knowledge and the range of conditions that will
impact the difficulty of performing the task. This
information is essential to create the mission scenario and
develop realistic training objectives.
Benefits/Achievements
The TSPs provide a standardized and
approved curriculum for using the GFT technology that will
increase the effectiveness of the training for key
operational and training tasks. The TSPs provide digitized,
cross-referenced, and linked training products that are
readily available and accessible for use by the Warfighter.
